Rise of foodstagram: the new age culture of meals

sushiFoodstagraming has become a normal part of our dining culture.

Currently on Instagram there are more than 172 billion posts utilizing the hashtag #food. In cultures throughout time, mealtime has been used as a time of sharing and social engagement with friends, family and peers.

Todays culture is no different, however our medium has changed. It’s no secret that technology has changed the way we see, feel, communicate, interact and engage with the world. So with so many mechanisms for creating constant connections with others, why would one of the most historically social events of the day be any different?

Foodstagraming (Instagraming or social sharing pictures of your food) has become fairly commonplace. Last year, a restaurant took to investigating why their wait times had grown throughout the years. The culprit- guests taking pictures and connecting to wifi.

We have a cultural need to share our life experiences, including wonderful meals and the people we share them with. It’s another level of the experience.

Many restaurants are even embracing the trend. Review sites such as Yelp encourage guest photos along with restaurant reviews. A restaurant in Israel is even offering an experience for all foodstagramers, meals and plates specially designed for capturing mobile shots of the dining experience.

The world is changing people! We connect through food and we connect through media…makes sense.
